Thermal loading test of a Wendelstein 7-X pumping gap panel

For the upcoming long pulse operation phase 2 "OP2" of Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X), new water cooled non planar stainless steel panels have been manufactured to protect wall plasma vessel behind divertor pumping gap. Such a panel is made machined ground plate with channels which are covered by likewise sheets. The latter electron-beam welded plates. There 60 7 different types designed remove stationary heat flux up 100 kW/m². specified cooling conditions are: 2.5 MPa inlet pressure, 30 °C temperature, and 0.27 ℓ/s flow rate. A prototype has validate design manufacturing process. In order verify thermo-hydraulic calculations performed ANSYS® CFX, thermal loading test on was carried out in SIRHEX facility at KIT. loaded surface (about 0.11 m²) black-finished, thermocouples were installed positions. placed vacuum tank heated an array six infrared lamps (400 V, max. 16 kW per lamp). deposited load about kW/m² measured calorimetry. paper describes experiment panel, its results. good agreement found between results, thus well validated.
